Two Comtoise clock with bronze frontons, showing tastes before and after the Revolution

Clocks- 2 (Two) Comtoise: (1) France, bronze-front Comtoise clock, 8 day, time and strike, weight driven movement, verge escapement, thread suspension with rear-hanging pendulum in an iron post and plate frame, cast brass dial with inset white enamel cartouche numerals, single iron hand, two pierced brass spandrels, topped by cast fronton featuring a backward facing Gallic rooster above a medallion with three fleur de lis, circa mid 18th Century. (2) France, bronze-front Comtoise wall clock, 8 day, time and strike with alarm, weight driven movement with verge escapement, thread suspension with rear-hanging pendulum in an iron post and plate frame, early enamel dial with concave center and convex chapter, Roman numerals for the hours, large Arabic numerals at 5 minute intervals, two iron hands, cast bronze fronton with backward facing Gallic rooster above a medallion, second half of the 18th Century.
Estimate: $400.00 - $600.00

Condition Report: (1) One of the cartouche numerals has a small chip, but they are otherwise very good. One of the spandrels is incomplete. Fairly clean movement with new cords on the wood winding drums. Both doors are modern replacements. Four bladed iron fan. Low, broad feet on the movement uprights. Bell is absent. Suspension steeple measures 4.5 inches. No weights or pendulum come with this clock. (2) Early enamel dial is in excellent condition. Surface rust on some parts of the movement. Remnant curlicue on the end of the strike trip piece. Small stepped feet on the movement uprights. Four bladed iron fan is nicely made. Turned escape wheel arbor support. No weights or pendulum come with this clock. The suspension shroud measures 4 inches in height. This pair of clocks makes for an interesting set. The two cast bronze frontons are nearly identical, both showing the backward facing rooster -- a longstanding symbol for France. The older clock with the cartouche numerals proudly displays three fleur de lis below the rooster. These were a symbol of monarchy. On the later clock with full enamel dial, the fleur de lis have been hastily filed off, perhaps during or after the French Revolution when any association with royalty was dangerous. Sold "as is ".
