As this lot contains a glass, mercury filled tube, the buyer will need to make arrangements for delivery, as standard shipping is not an option. The pendulum on this clock has a compensation device attached to the inside of the rim. The pendulum has six screws, and curved strips of metal are attached by single screws on opposite sides of the ring. The other screws pass through large holes in the ring, and are fastened to the extreme ends of the strip, allowing for movement in the event of a change in temperature.

It seems likely that Tiffany Electric purchased these cases from Seth Thomas. A remarkable Tiffany Electric that goes far beyond the standard models.

Both the rear plate and the dial are marked "Pendule 400 Jours" with the "CG" trademark on both as well. This movement with serial "No.A.8.-525-2". Note the weights for adjusting the rate of the clock are sealed within the disc pendulum. One must use a small clock key to turn screw on the side of the pendulum disc. Very nice early disc pendulum. This model was marketed in the U.S. by the New Haven Clock Co. and shown in their 1886 trade catalog.

The disc pendulum matches Terwilliger pendulum number 21, which is often attributed to Jahresuhrenfabrik, but widely used by others. This is an uncommon, early, and very attractive clock.

Movement back plate layout corresponds to Terwilliger's plate 1601. Serial number 126387. Very good disc pendulum with matching serial number. Not many 400-day clocks with calendars turn up. This is a rare clock in good condition. Similar to clock number 21 in the section 6 of Terwilliger's book.

Condition Report: lacquer on the base has turned brown. One long crack in the side of the base. The brass components under the glass are still bright, with some light tarnish. Dial is very good with one scratch between 10:00 and 11:00. Hands and dome are both good. Lower block of the suspension has broken off from the spring, but is included. The signed movement back plate corresponds to Terwilliger's plate number 1674. The movement is held together with knurled nuts as is typical of Petersen movements. In his book on 400-day clocks, Charles Terwilliger states that this is "unquestionably the most complicated 400-Day Clock ever made. Only a very limited number of clocks reached the market and it was very soon discontinued."This is a very desirable clock for collectors.

This model is shown in Terwilliger's book on 400-day clocks in the section on " some Outstanding Pre-World War I 400-Day Clocks", number 50.

Rear movement plate corresponds to Terwilliger's plate number 1619, though this one has a clear maker's trademark. It also bears the serial number 151642. This model is featured in Terwilliger's book in the section titled "Some Outstanding Pre-World War I 400-Day Clocks", number 14.

The stamps read "D.R.P. No. 144688 / U.S. P. No. 751686". The suspension is complete. This model is shown in Terwilliger's reference book on 400-day clocks in the section entitled "Some Outstanding Pre-World War I 400-Day Clocks"as example 26, having been found in a Jahresuhrenfabrik catalog from 1905. Suspension is intact. The rare two-ball pendulum is attributed to Jahresuhrenfabrik and is one of the only known two-ball pendulum designs. The back movement plate of this clock corresponds to Terwilliger's plate number 1574F, and coincidentally, has the same serial number as the drawing, which is 142086. This clock is shown in Terwilliger's book in the section on "Some Outstanding Pre-World War I 400-Day Clocks"as example number 34. That one is attributed to Jahresuhrenfabrik. Hanging clocks with torsion pendulum movements are uncommon.

Condition Report: wood base with some worn finish on the outer edges. Brass is bright and was probably cleaned. Enamel dial is perfect, as are blued steel hands. Lower block of suspension is not attached to spring, but is included. Proper Becker style early disc pendulum. Rear plate looks to be number 1203 as documented by Terwilliger in his book on 400-day clocks. It has the Becker trademark, gold medal award stamp, and serial code 1875065.

Condition Report: top surface of wood base has many fine scratches from a previous (probably disc) pendulum. Enamel dial with a few hairline cracks. Top finial of similar style is included but will need to be reattached. Suspension is intact. Back movement plate which is very similar to Terwilliger's plate number 1383 is stamped with serial number 116634. Rings for suspension guard are absent. Pendulum is missing side pieces and decorative nut for the bottom.

Condition Report: (1) The brass case has darkened, especially the base outside of the dome. Lower block of the suspension is absent. 2 inch enamel dial is very good, as are hands. Dome fits well. Movement is signed "PH / Semester Uhr" and serial number 14923. Though Hauck promoted the "Semester clocks" heavily, perhaps only as 500 were ever made. (2) Brass is slightly tarnished. Very nice 1.5 inch enamel dial. Good hands and dome. Bottom block of the suspension is absent. Unsigned movement plate corresponds to Terwilliger's 1175. Very nice and uncommon Kiezle semi-spherical pendulum. This model is among the smallest 30-day torsion pendulum clocks ever produced. It is shown among the outstanding clocks as example 82 in Terwilliger's book. Dimensions are for the larger, the Hauck (1) Sold "as is".
