This clock bears the marks of three of the 19th century's finest makers and retailers of high quality carriage clocks, and documents business relationships between individual firms at the high end of the carriage clock trade. The name of Klaftenberger is well known as a retailer of fine clocks, and Henri Jacot is known as one of the best finishers. The "AB" inside the plates is believed to be that of Alfred Baveux, who is known to have supplied "blancs roulants" to Jacot for finishing.

The partnership of Aubert & Klaftenberger was created in 1835 by the union of two watch retailers, C.J. Klaftenberger of London, and D.F. Aubert of Geneva. The firm was a favorite of Prince Albert and Queen Victoria, who often ordered clocks and watches to be presented as gifts. The company also exhibited work at the Crystal Palace Exhibition of 1851, showing complicated watches, a half seconds beating regulator with remontoire, as well as pocket and marine chronometers. While many high quality French carriage clocks bearing the name of the firm are known, English made examples are rare. The case maker L. Lange is known for his high quality work, for both French and English makers. See Roberts, "Carriage and other Travelling Clocks", page 348, for a nearly identical Lange case.

Condition Report: retains original "two plane" Jules style platform with ratchet cut scape wheel [similar to club tooth]. The porcelain dial has no chips nor lines, however there is abrasion below 6, where a signature has been effaced, possibly that of Jules a' Paris. One unexplained item on this case is the presence of 4 small holes in the top bars, possibly drilled to allow a bit more volume from the delicate bell. Note early travel clocks often had a knurled knob on the time set, so the winding key is only single ended.
